5 Things to Ensure Your iPhone Will Last Long

When you have an iPhone your whole world revolves around your handset. You have your email, your calendar, your social media, entertainment, contacts and more all stored on your iPhone. Therefore, you want to make sure you look after your iPhone, to ensure it will have a good long life, and always reliably be there for you when you need it. You can ensure your iPhone will last longer and remain in top condition by following these tips.

1 – Car safety

Your iPhone will always be with you when you’re in the car, and there are some precautions you need to take to ensure it remains safe and in a good condition:

  • Extreme temperatures. Your iPhone can experience extreme hot and cold temperatures if you leave it in your car. Temperatures of over 1000F and under 400F can degrade the performance of the battery. If you find that your iPhone is overheating, turn it off for several hours, but if your phone is emitting heat even when it’s off there could be a serious problem and you need to take it back to Apple or your provider right away.
  • Car chargers. Car chargers should not be used as a primary means of charging your iPhone as the 12 volt electrical system used in your car is designed to run the headlights and the interior controls and was never designed as a phone charger. As a result you can experience a power surge in your car because you have overloaded the small capacity system and this can fry the main board of your iPhone. If you do have to use a car charger, don’t have your iPhone plugged in when you turn your car on or off, also only use Apple approved car charger products as they will use to your iPhone better.
  • Risk of theft. Not only will leaving your iPhone in your car expose it to extreme temperatures, you will also expose it to the risk of theft as you’ve probably left your phone somewhere in full view.

2 – Moisture

You should already know that no mobile phone likes water or moisture, so try and keep your iPhone away from high moisture areas. This means don’t leave it in the bathroom, near swimming pools or in other high humidity areas as it only takes a small amount of moisture to do damage to your iPhone.

If your iPhone is exposed to moisture you can try and dry it out by removing the back casing and the battery as soon as possible. To help absorb the moisture, submerge your iPhone in a container of uncooked rice, seal the container and leave it overnight. If you don’t have any rice, leave the phone to air dry for a day before using it again.

3 – Memory

iPhones have an amazing memory capacity in being able to store your favourite songs, movies, images and files. However, be aware of how you are treating the memory of your iPhone because it’s not unlimited. If you find that your apps are crashing or your web pages are freezing it could be a problem with your phone’s memory. Therefore, make sure you don’t load up your iPhone to capacity, instead leave at least half a gig of memory free to handle any spikes in memory use.

At the same time take note of these crashes because if the same app keeps crashing it could be a problem with the app, and if Safari has a continual problem loading a page, that page could be too big. For easier web surfing on your iPhone look for the mobile version of a web page. Remember that your iPhone is really a mini computer and if you restart your iPhone this will help ease the burden on the phone’s memory.

4 – Battery

The battery is the life blood of your iPhone and you need to take good care of it to ensure your iPhone lasts a long time. You can look after your battery by:

  • Sync your chip. If you find that your iPhone doesn’t fully charge when it is plugged in, it could be that the chip on the battery and the chip on the iPhone which measure the charge flowing back and forth are out of sync. To fix this run your iPhone battery completely flat and then charge it fully up before running it right down to flat again. This should help sync the chips, and should be done every month or two.
  • Battery indicator. You may also find that the battery indicator is showing a false reading, showing that your battery is flat when it’s not. To correct the indicator run your iPhone completely flat before recharging it and after doing this several times the indicator should reset.
  • Not overcharging. Make sure you remove your iPhone from the charger once it is fully charged, or turn your phone off while it is charging. When you over charge your iPhone you can cause it to overheat.

5 – Protection

Because your iPhone is with you all the time, it can see a few hard knocks in the course of a day, and these can all add up to damaging your handset. Therefore, to protect and preserve your iPhone for optimal performance take the following precautions:

  • Cracks around the dock. Many iPhones experience cracks around the dock connector and headphone jack, as this is where the plastic of the screen is the thinnest. Apple are aware of the flaw and will replace your handset if it happens. However, to avoid cracks and scratches on your iPhone screen use a hard case and a thin skin protector over the screen. While the iPhone is scratch resistant it will still come in contact with keys, coins and more in your pocket or bag.
  • Replace your protection. The transparent skin protectors for your screen can stop your iPhone from getting scratched, but make sure you replace them every few months for optimal protection.
  • What where you put your iPhone. With everything at your fingertips on your iPhone, it will often be in your hand, but when you need two hands for something you are likely to set down your phone wherever you can. This leads to your phone being placed on the ground or on the roof of your car, and then forgetting where you’ve put it. Also don’t let your iPhone float loosely in your bag, instead keep it in a separate pocket.
  • Clean out your speakers. At the bottom of your iPhone handset there is a speaker and a microphone which can experience problems over time. If you find you can’t hear your callers or they can’t hear you, you may need to clean out your speakers. You can do this with some strong rubbing alcohol on an old toothbrush, and using a can of compressed air to clear out the speakers. Make sure you don’t use too much alcohol as you don’t want any moisture to enter your iPhone.

Apple iOS 5: Taking A Bite Out Of Google’s World

Apples iOS 5 Set To Reclaim Lost Ground
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Google has made inroads into many tech areas but Apple have refused to take this incursion lying down. The new iOS 5 features aren’t just another bag of bland tricks or eye candy for techies. The new apps and inclusions are designed to do only one thing: maximise your time spent using Apples iOS.

Sure, the new improvements to Safari have brought the iPhone and iPad into the 21st century (just every other vendor has had tabbed browsing since the year dot) but that’s only a little of what’s on offer.

Real time search or real time news? Google had a deal with Twitter. Google paid Twitter money to access their real time Tweets. The deal ran out. Google stopped supplying real time search results. Coincidence? Not likely and Apple know this. Forget Google+, at least for now, Twitter has around 175 million users. On average, there are around 50 million Tweets per day. By giving users an integrated Twitter app (including feed aggregation) Apple have just punched a big hole in Googles real time search strategy.

iMessage is here. Admittedly, it should have been with us a long time ago but we’ll put that argument to bed for now. Google created a messaging framework called Google Wave. Sadly (I mean that will all honesty) it nosedived! So what’s the difference between Google Wave and iMessage? The platform. Apple own it and, when they launch new products, we’re likely to use them. iMessage will bring many of the features found in Wave (group messaging, content sharing and secure, encrypted communications). Is there really any need for GChat?

Not long ago, getting your hands on a free photo editor was pretty hit and miss until Google bought, and gave away, Picasa. iOS 5 comes with enhanced photo editing capabilities including edit and crop, red eye reduction and auto-enhance. Once you’re done, whisk your photo’s off to be stored in iCloud or share them with iMessage. It’s basic but it’s functional and the photo editor is integrated with your camera menu which pretty much does away with the need for a third party editor.

Streaming media/TV integration is another area where Apple have hit back at Google’s forays into new markets. So far, Google TV offering has seen little enthusiasm from consumers. The lack of consumer uptake has given Apple a chance to open up another another chink in Google’s armour.Tight integration with iOS 5 lets user securely stream content from their iPad 2 onto an HDTV (via an Apple TV box, of course). To many, that might seem like old news but consider this: television is still one of the biggest sources of revenue for advertisers. You can almost hear the pennies dropping into Apple’s piggy bank!

News feeds are old… news! Apples News Stand brings yet more disruptive technology to the fore. News aggregators have long been used as a way of slicing up and delivering content that we’re actually interested in. The only problem is that most of them required a live internet connection. News Stand downloads content based on your subscription preferences providing you with offline content… just like ‘old fashioned’ newspapers. Sure, this is a paid service but it’s one that may well become the standard model for delivering online news content.

In much the same way as Google’s early days, Apple have provided the platform. Now we’re starting to see them leverage not only consumer demand but also every aspect of social interaction to build something that everyone can be a part of. Where is Google?

The Evolution of The iPhone

The iPhone is a series of best selling smart phones licensed with AT&T. Created by Apple, the iPhone continues the line of innovative Apple products such as the iPod mp3 player. The iPhone has become famous for its application system, a marketplace of downloadable applications that give the iPhone unlimited functionality. Since 2007, there have been four models of the iPhone with a new phone released each year.

The Original iPhone

The original iPhone was created as a hybrid between cellular phone and PDA technology, utilizing new designs such as a touchscreen interface. The glass touchscreen was unique for its multi-touch functionality. The user could touch multiple points on the screen for additional functions (such as zooming). The keyboard and mouse controls were incorporated entirely into the touch interface, similar to a tablet PC. Internet access was provided through the EDGE network. The original iPhone was released with a 4GB and 8GB model, with a 16GB model released later.

The iPhone 3G

The iPhone 3G was the second generation of iPhone, released in July 2008. The iPhone 3G came with much of the same hardware as the original iPhone, but had an increase in software functionality. The major introduction for the iPhone 3G was the Apple App Store. The App Store allowed users to purchase and download applications, small programs which added additional functions to the phone. This became a trademark of the iPhone brand that has continued to this day. The iPhone 3G was also the first iPhone built to use the 3G wireless network for internet access – the original used only the slower EDGE network.

The iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS, released in June 2009, was created with a focus on hardware improvements. The display screen for the phone was updated to use a greater number of pixels and have a richer color display. The processor and memory were upgraded for the first time since the original iPhone, allowing for faster speeds and better performance of applications. A new camera was also added, allowing 3 megapixel photos and video capture in high definition. The iPhone 3GS also included a compass application, using a built in magnetometer.

The iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is the latest model of iPhone, released in June 2010. The aesthetics of the phone were the focus with an all-new steel frame and glass display. The phone is thinner than previous models – the exterior antenna in the steel housing gives the phone a smaller profile than older iPhones. The iPhone 4 also received a hardware upgrade with a new processor and double the memory of the iPhone 3GS. It also uses a forward mounted video camera (in addition to the rear HD camera) to allow for video conferencing.

10 iPad 2 Apps Everyone Should Have

The iPad 2 is wonderful piece of technology, but to get the most out of it you must know what apps to download. There are thousands of apps to choose from, but there are 10 apps that everyone should have downloaded on their iPad 2.

Photoshop Express

The iPad 2 is perfect for viewing pictures, and the Photoshop Express allows you to make your pictures look their best. The app lets you crop, rotate or straighten any photo on your iPad 2. There are also a variety of filters and effects that can be apply, and it is all free.

Angry Birds

This game must be played by anyone that has a tablet or smart phone. The game looks and plays better than ever on the iPad 2. The colors and sound effects are more vibrant and clear, which makes this game even more addicting than before.

Infinity Blade

If there is any game shows off the beautiful graphics of the iPad 2, it is Infinity Blade. The graphics rival anything seen on the Xbox or PlayStation. Infinity Blade is a simple sword fighting game that is played with swipes of a finger on the screen.

Kindle

Why pay for an e-reader when you already have an iPad 2. Downloading the Kindle app essentially turns your iPad 2 into a Kindle with a larger screen for free. Books can be directly purchased from amazon through the app, and are instantly stored within the app. Any of your books can be chosen to read from the homepage, and start where you left off.

Netflix

Anyone that has a Netflix membership must download the app on to their iPad 2. The app lets you choose from thousands of movies and television shows to instantly watch on your tablet. A WiFi connection is required to get a clear picture.

Dropbox

Dropbox is an online storage service that is available on the iPad, iPhone and any Windows or Mac PC. The service allows you to store file from your computer and then access them anywhere on your iPad 2. Videos, pictures, PDF files and music can all be stored on Dropbox.

Friendly
There is not an official Facebook app currently available for the iPad 2, but Friendly does a good job of replacing one. The pages on the Friendly app looks exactly like they would on Facebook, and it gives you access to all of the features available on the full website.

Epicurious

Epicurious lets you search over 25000 different recipes to find the perfect dish for any upcoming meal. All of the recipes have pictures of the finished product that look stunning with the improved graphics of the iPad 2. The app will even search for recipes based on the ingredients that you already have in your own home, and will create a shopping list for the required items that you do not have.

Garage Band

Every music lover must have Garage Band downloaded on their tablet. The app has a virtual piano, guitar, bass and drum set to let you make your own songs. The preset chords and rhythms make every note sound good.

iDisplay

The iDisplay app turns your iPad 2 into an side monitor for any Mac or Windows 7 PC. Placing the tablet next to the monitor, and the image will spread across both screens.

It would be a shame to have the iPad 2 and not get everything out of it. Downloading these apps will show off everything great about the iPad 2.

Apple iOS 5 Features Worth Talking About

iOS 5 - Worth Talking About by ZAGG.com

**This guest post was provided by our good friend ZAGG.com – A leading provider in device protection. While you’re enjoying your new iOS make sure to protect with personalized iPhone skins.**

News of iOS 5 has been blazing across the internet, and many people (including myself) are excited for the new features it will bring.  According to the Apple website, these changes are in the number of over 200.  That’s a ton!  But for time’s sake, here are some of the bigger new features you can expect:

  • Notification Center -The one stop spot to view all of your missed calls, texts, etc.
  • iMessage -The ability to text, send video and other media to other iOS 5 users
  • Newsstand -A place for all of your magazine subscriptions to be read in their most current issue
  • Reminders -Streamlined To Do Lists that sync with other apps like iCal
  • PC Free -The ability to use your iPad, iPhone or iPod right out of the box without first connecting to a computer
  • Twitter Integration -The ability to Tweet and respond to @ tweets no matter what application you’re in
  • Camera/Photos -Take more detailed pictures, take pictures from the “Lock” screen, zoom by pinching, snap the picture with the “volume up” button, organize photos in to albums, crop and remove red eye, and stream your photos to your other iOS 5 devices through iCloud

I guess that about covers some of the more major changes that are upcoming in iOS 5!  Now let’s take a look at what new features are going to be of the biggest benefit.  Everyone uses their iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad for different reasons, so certain changes may not be as important to some as others.  However, the changes that are going to have a major impact on many iOS 5 users are the Twitter Integration and Camera/Photo changes.

Over the past year or so, snapping photos with the iPhone 4 has become increasingly popular.  As more people are uploading their photos to Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook, I think Apple has realized the importance of the mobile camera they’ve created.  In order to expand on this, Apple has made iOS photography even easier, adding the ability to edit photos and making it much easier to snap a photo on-the-go.

But Apple knows that people don’t take pictures just because; they want to share those photos with their friends. Currently people use a variety of 3rd party apps (like Instagram) to share their photos on Twitter. With Twitter being integrated into much of iOS 5, the ability to share photos with your friends (and especially with other iOS 5 users) will be ridiculously easy.

Personally, I am also very excited for the Notification Center changes. While not a game-changer, having all notifications in one place is going to make life a lot easier. I could also see iMessage having a large impact on other people, especially those who hate data plans.

Again, these are just a few of the changes upcoming with the release of iOS 5. With over 200 hundred changes incoming, there is likely to be something for everyone.

On a slightly unrelated note, I am freaking excited for the iPhone 5 running iOS 5.

Tips to Stay Safe When Using Location-Based Apps on Your iPhone

iphone

One reason iPhones are so popular is geo-locator technology. It enables apps to be created that can offer services to users based on their physical location in the world, such as with a GPS. There are hundreds of location-based smartphone apps available on every network, and more are being added daily. Some of the most popular location-based apps right now are Fandango (find movies in theaters near you), OpenTable (find local restaurants and make reservations), Foursquare (compete with others to become mayor by “checking-in” to locations), and Yelp (read and write local restaurant reviews). There are, however, some safety concerns to be aware of for users of location-based apps.

Safety Concerns with Location-Based Smartphone Apps

There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about location-based smartphone apps and how they can be a threat to the safety of users. This is because some of these location-based apps tell other people your location, which leads to burglaries and personal safety issues.

Some apps are connected through Facebook and other social networking sites, which enables all of your contacts to see where you are. For instance, Foursquare is a location-based service that allows you to “check-in” to a location. This information is then accessible by your contacts on your social networks. There are obvious problems with this. For instance, if you go on vacation and then “check-in” using FourSquare, all of your contacts who also use the app will know that you are not at home, and everyone knows that most burglaries happen by people you know when they know you won’t be around.

Using apps that track your location can also bring about personal safety issues. For instance, if you log that you are at home alone or at the park by yourself, predators may find this the perfect opportunity to act.

Another safety concern of location-based apps is privacy. In general, smartphone companies do a good job at keeping user information secure when they gather data; it is app markets that should not be trusted. Anyone can be an app creator, which means there are going to be people ready and willing to scam others out of their money and personal information.

How to Protect Yourself When Using Location-Based Smartphone Apps

The most important thing to remember before giving information to location-based smartphone apps is that it can be viewed by anyone in your networks of contacts who also use the app. More than likely, you have contacts that are mere acquaintances, or that you have met online through common interests. There may even be people in your networks that you have never met or do not know personally. This means you should not log your location or say anything that could potentially bring harm to you or your belongings, such as being on vacation or being alone.

Also, only use location-based apps that come from trustworthy sources. This is the best way to avoid scams, identity theft, and malware. Just like with computers, smartphones can get viruses and other malware that can affect the workings of the phone and steal personal information.

Location-based apps are useful and fun, so people definitely should not avoid them altogether. People just need to be careful not to endanger themselves while using the apps, and be on the lookout for untrustworthy apps.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of iPhones?

iphones

Today’s world is now almost totally dependent on technologies. There has been a rapid advance of technology in the recent years and the iPhone is one such product of the rapidly growing world of technology. The iPhones are an internet and multimedia enabled Smartphone which are mainly marketed by Apple. The very first iPhone got unveiled by Apple on January 9, 2007 and it was released in the market on June 29, 2007.

What are iPhones?

The iPhones as said above are internet and multimedia enabled Smartphones which can equally work as a cell phone and video camera. The user interface of this phone is built in with the touch application and it also includes a virtual keyboard. Most of the iPhone applications are meant for the newest iPhone 3G model and are also supposed to work with the recent versions of iPod Touch. For that purpose, you will be requires to have an active iTunes Store account and then you may be able to download free applications and even the purchased applications into your iPhone.

How can you find useful iPhone applications?

In order to find the applications for your iPhone cell you can:

  1. The Apple website has included some useful applications for targeted visitors, like applications for cooking, for students, and so on. You will be able to get other such applications if you browse Apple staff’s favorite Applications in “App Staff Picks” at Apple’s website.
  2. You can also get the applications from your friends. The best part about this is that you are not even required to ask about all these from your friends. There’s an application for this too – “Chorus” that uses the social networking approach in order to let you and your friends share the cool applications.
  3. There are also some web based services that provide for customized applications recommendation known as the “apptizr”. It provides you the personalized recommendation of the top applications from the application store based on your likes and dislikes.
  4. There are also websites like the AppStoreHQ which does the search for you. The AppStoreHQ too uses the social networking approach like the “Chorus” in order to find the best and most suitable mobile applications for you.

You can also do some random research on the iPhone applications in the Internet in order to get some interesting ones.
